Lovingly known as Betty, she was born in Bridgend, Wales but most of her younger life was spent growing up in Oxford, England. She had 3 siblings, Bryan her older brother, David her younger brother and her baby sister Ann. She married her husband Walter John in 1956 in Oxford, England. They had one daughter Kim born in Oxford in 1957 until they immigrated to Canada in 1967 where their second daughter Julia who was born in Montreal in 1968.
