2018 Young Adult Grief Awareness Day Toolkit

Students start a chapter because they are, or they know someone who is struggling to cope with the illness or death of loved one.
AMF Advocates do what we do because we were, or we knew someone who did their best to cope with grief.
It is our job to ensure we are helping to support and empower grieving young adults in these wonderful but difficult formative years. We are helping to build the next set of the world’s leaders – compassionate, driven, and inspirational forces of change.
One out of three college students (approximately 6 million) has experienced the death of a family member or close friend within the last year. But, no one talks about it, so many feel alone. A “silent epidemic”.
Bereaved students are at risk of social withdrawal, developmental problems, mental illness, and decreased academic performance. These students need opportunities to connect with their peers, support one another, and channel their grief towards positive outlets, such as community service.
Actively Moving Forward (AMF) has been helping students create chapters doing exactly this on college campuses for the last 11 years.
These chapters and opportunities have been important ways in which students work through their grief.
The goal of National Young Adult Grief Awareness Day is to raise awareness about the prevalence and impact of coping with the illness or death of a loved one during young adulthood. In the process, we hope to spread the word about Actively Moving Forward (AMF).
Help us continue to break the silence and give a voice to grieving young adults around the nation!

Use your social media to educate others about the incidence of college student grief. Update social media to say:
Did you know:
1 in 3 college students has experienced the illness or death of a loved one within the last year. But no one talks about it, so young adults feel alone and unsupported. Join me in raising awareness about grieving college students so we can all Actively Move Forward TOGETHER!

Share a picture of you and your loved one who died in honor of your loved one on your social media.
Do something that makes you feel connected with your loved one who has died (e.g. listen to his/her favorite music, visit the gravesite, eat his/her favorite meal, wear something that reminds you of them, etc.)
Show your support for others grieving the illness or death of a loved one.
Send a text or message to friends and/or family to let them know that you are there for them.
Share a picture of this year’s Awareness Day logo on your social media with the hashtags above to help other’s find the support they need.
Serve and connect to others grieving a loss.
Spend time with someone who is grieving to show them that you are there to support them; do something kind and helpful such as cooking a meal, or helping with chores, etc.
