Patrick Craven

Place of birth: New Orleans, LA

Religious affiliation: Catholic

Patrick Craven, my dad, was the funniest guy I’ve ever met. He also had the best music taste. He got me into classic rock, The Beatles, Sting and The Police, U2, and even Jimmy Buffett. He is also responsible for my Star Trek obsession. He spent his whole life in New Orleans, and he was always friendly. He’d strike up a conversation with just about anyone — it was annoying. He had such an expansive knowledge. We’d watch Jeopardy together sometimes, and he’d know all the answers. He and I had our struggles, especially in the years leading up to his death. He was diagnosed with cancer, then contracted fungal pneumonia, which impaired his ability to breathe normally. He was in a medically induced coma for Christmas and we said goodbye on New Year’s Eve. He didn’t always make the right call in life and had many faults that affected our family, but he was still a great guy. He was my dad, and I love him and miss him every day.

Today he would have been 55. I'm not sad though. I usually don't get too sad around events/anniversaries, but it's still hard to believe he's not here. His best friend, Thomas, invited me to Port of Call,my dad's favorite place, but I'm at school and cant drive in again. I told Thomas to drink a monsoon for me because that was my dad's favorite drink there.
