I am a professional photographer living in Minnesota. I have been on a grief journey since August 4, 1997, when my son Adam died in an airplane accident. He was a flight instructor.  The image I’ve selected for this post is to reveal that the old saying “… the calm before the storm” can be reversed when we look to the “end of the storm” and find renewed peace and light.  This image was taken on the North Shore of Lake Superior on November 11, 2022.  It depicts the very end of the fury of the lake in what locals call The Gales of November. Each year along the North Shore of Lake Superior a day of commemoration is observed to remember the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald and its crew of 39, the famous iron-ore ship that sank on November 10, 1975.  It has been memorialized in the song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” by Gordon Lightfoot.  This image calms my soul because not only did I photograph it, but I sat there, in the swing, for a long time, taking in the peace and light – remembering my son.  See more of my ‘Art That Heals’ at www.marktriplett.com.
