Grief Advocate
Do you want to reach out to a grieving student but don’t know what to say? Would you like to make your campus more sensitive to the needs of these students? Then you should be a Grief Advocate!
AMF, a HealGrief program, is proud to announce our new certificate program for professionals. We are dedicated to providing quality programs to promote education and raise awareness about the unique issues of bereaved college students. As professionals in the field of higher education, it is our responsibility to ensure our students are getting the support they need to succeed.
Join us for our NEW hands-on workshop helping compassionate professionals, both staff and faculty, increase their knowledge and skill set when working with bereaved students. This distinction will be awarded to individuals who complete the following criteria.
Individuals Requirements:
Attend The Grief Sensitive Campus Workshop – Continuing Education Credits available. (link to GSC workshop – schedule)
To retain certification, attend 2 or more webinars per year hosted by AMF, 2 AMF approved seminars (link to approved seminars) or attend the National Conference on Young Adult Grief.
Individuals will gain:
Certificate of completion at the end of the Grief Sensitive Campus Workshop.
A Grief Advocate sticker that shows you are supportive and approachable.
National recognition on AMF’s list of Grief Advocates. (Link to the Grief Advocates List)
Quarterly newsletters bringing you up to date information on college student bereavement.
A community of professionals dedicated to making a difference in the lives of grieving students across the nation.
Grief Sensitive Campuses:
Leaving Compassionate Impressions on Campus
The primary purpose of this one-day workshop is to educate college faculty and staff on how to be grief sensitive to students that are experiencing the illness or death of a loved one. It is also designed to help all college campuses create a task force to positively respond to campus tragedy as well as define a campus-wide Student Bereavement Leave Policy.
Grief Sensitive Campus Workshop:
The one-day Grief Awareness workshop will consist of three modules:
- General Grief Support
- Becoming a Grief Informed Campus
- Dealing with a Campus Crisis
Each module will contain multiple sessions addressing related topics. Each of these topics are listed below. An AMF representative will bring this program to your campus.
General Grief Support:

Trauma: The Body and the Brain
Stigmas in Death and Grief
Creating a Grief Sensitive Campus
Proactive Planning
AMF Chapter
Bereavement Leave Policy
Becoming a Grief Advocate

Campuses Requirements:
The Grief Sensitive Campus Workshop – Continuing Education Credits available.
○ At least 2 faculty & 2 staff are required to attend the Grief Sensitive Campus Workshop from one campus.
○ At least one of the staff needs to be from the Dean of Students office.
To retain certification, attend 2 or more webinars per year hosted by AMF, 2 AMF approved seminars, or attend the National Conference on Young Adult Grief.
Campuses will gain:
Certificate of completion at the end of the Grief Sensitive Campus Workshop.
College/University will be listed on AMF’s website in recognition of their completion of the program.
Each participant will gain national recognition on AMF’s list of Grief Advocates.

Grief Task Force Consultation:
This additional program allows an AMF grief expert to facilitate a separate one-day hands-on consultation to assist a campus task force in planning and implementing a Grief Informed Campus plan.
Prerequisite: Campus will need to obtain the Grief Awareness Workshop Certificate prior to the Task Force Consultation.
Consultation will include:
Structure of Task Force
Evaluation of Current Services
Proactive Program Planning
Crisis Response Planning
Duties of new programming
Education of Faculty and Staff
Education of Students
Grief Sensitive Campus & Task Force will:
Meet all of the above criteria for Grief Sensitive Campus
Complete Task Force Consultation workshop
Have an active Grief Task Force
Campuses will gain:
College/University will be listed on our website for recognition of their Taskforce.
Renewal of Certificate
Both campus and individual certificates must be renewed each year.
Individual certificate renewal will require attendance of at least 2 webinars provided by AMF, AMF approved seminars or attendance at the National Conference for College Student Grief.
