I painted this mourning dove on the one-year anniversary of my husband’s sudden and unexpected death. We were getting close to retirement and planning all sorts of adventures … he suffered a stroke in the middle of his workday here at home, and was gone by the evening. I had lost my mother just eight months before, and my dad a couple of years before that. I had also developed a health problem that led me to give up my career, the month before my husband died. So there were a lot of losses … nearly everything about my life had changed in such a short span of time. I took up watercolor painting to try to make a positive use of all the time I now have … and to help me process the losses.
