Place of birth: Dinwiddie, VA

Mr. Herman L. Harvell, 74, of 19722 Flatfoot Road, Dinwiddie, Va. was born May 6, 1940 to the late Charlie and Charity Dickerson Harvell. He was the youngest of 11 children. At an early age, Herman was baptized at Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, Va. He completed the 8th grade in the Dinwiddie County Public School System. Herman served in the U.S. Army from 1961-1964 during the time of the Berlin Build-Up in Germany. After relocating to South Hill, Va., he earned his GED and started his own business, “Lee Harvell’s Appliance Service”. After closing his business, he became employed at Powhatan Correctional Center in Powhatan, Va. and then transferred to Mecklenburg County Correctional Center in Boydton, Va.

He entered into eternal rest Wednesday evening June 4 at Sitter and Barfoot Veterans Care Center in Richmond, Va. He was preceded in death by five brothers: Leander, John, Charlie, Robert, and James; four sisters: Mary, Flossie, Lillie and Estelle. Herman leaves to cherish his memories one sister: Glenis R. Warren of Wyncote, Penn.; four daughters: Julia Alexander (Ronnie) of Petersburg, Va., Desiree Roberts (Davis Jr.) of Callao, Va., Angela Harvell–Moore of Chesapeake, Va. and Lydia Harvell of Colonial Heights, Va.; one step-daughter: Cynthia Booker of Petersburg; four grandchildren: Ronnie Alexander Jr, Jermontra Moore, Ashley Roberts, Diamond Roberts; two step-grandchildren: Dejanee Walton and Marquis Smith. He is also survived by Gloria Booze Harvell, Mary Booker Harvell, Hazel Wynn Parham, a close friend, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and special friends to include Willie Thorne, Lewis Satterwhite, Juanita and Spencer Dickens, Junior Ridley and Lee Henderson.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 11AM on Sunday June 8, 2014 with Reverend Herbert Anderson officiating at Little Zion Baptist Church, 24603 Little Zion Road, Carson, VA. The interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Park, 18599 Highway One North, La Crosse, VA.
