Place of birth: None
Mary Elaine Anderson Griggs, December 14, 1940 – October 10, 2015, is predeceased by parents, Mabel & Harry, and daughter Diane. She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert Griggs Sr., their three children, four granddaughters, three grandsons, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, two sisters, nieces, and many friends.
It all began when a snowball flew from the hand of young Mary colliding directly with her target, the back of Robert’s head. Without missing a beat, he whipped around and exclaimed to his friend “That’s the girl I am going to marry.” The 14th of September 1958 marks the beginning of the Griggs’ Legacy.
Their three children, Robert Jr., Elaine Mary, & Theresa Ann will be the first to say how strong-willed their mother was. She was tough as she was determined that her children would grow to know the benefits of hard-work. One-by-one they graduated to adulthood with careers in their desired fields and though they worked for their titles, Mary knew the real work and true reward would come later. As always, she was proven correct while crying tears of joy every time one of her grandchildren was born and all over again with every new milestone their parents guided them to meet just as she once did.
Recently, Mary fondly recalled the kind nature of her parents and wondered idly if that is where her gentleness came from. Her voice was soft in speaking and in song. Her hands were soft and healing. Her eyes were so kind, and in the days they could no longer see, her family found comfort in the volume her words spoke, recalling memories as vividly as the moment they happened. Her heart was charitable as well as pure and, on several occasions, had a difficult time containing so much love.
Get Ready It’s Going To Get Shitty (G.R.I.G.G.S. – get it?). The family motto, thanks to Mary, will forever remind us that life is is not worth living if you can’t get a laugh or two out of it.
Sweet Margie, we will be listening for you with every call of a bird just as you have prepared us for all of our lives.
Celebration of Life, hosted by immediate family, will be held at La Riviera Restaurant & Lounge (113 Main Street, Matawan, NJ 07747) on Tuesday October 13, 2015 from 6:00pm – 9:00pm.
