Ermellina (AKA “Emy) Sciortino, age 85, passed away suddenly due to a stroke on August 17th, 2020. She was born in Torino, Italy February 12, 1935 and later immigrated to Canada. Having survived breast cancer, she exemplified a survivor mentality in everything she did. Determined to provide a home and food for her 5 children, she learned to speak English and immediately sought and found work as a waitress in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her love of health and helping others lead her to eventually become a Certified Nursing Assistant and she was instrumental helping seniors stay in their homes. A great cook, she spent many happy days in her kitchen cooking delicious authentic Italian foods from scratch. Many fond memories were made of her making noodles manually with her pasta machine as she taught her daughters the pasta making tradition. Her love of cooking evolved into a new business where she opened up a successful Italian deli in North Vancouver, British Columbia. She later settled in Coquitlam, British Columbia and used her hard work ethic and determination to open up the Puss and Boots daycare where she shared her love and knowledge of teaching children compassion and empathy for others. Her compassion was wide spread as she was a contributor and advocate for the BC Schizophrenia Society. She is preceded in death by her late daughter, Lilly (Rosalia) Scott who passed away May 14th, 2019 from Cancer. Cherished mother of her surviving children, Cindy Thompson, Susanna Poyer, Paul Sciortino, Peter Sciortino and loving grandmother to Andrew Polemeni, Rachael Thompson and Michael Scott, she treasured her family above all else. She had much to be proud of as she overcame many obstacles and left behind a legacy of love.
