Place of birth: Jesup, Wayne County, Georgia

Kenneth Chad Poppell , 29 of Jesup, Ga. died Monday, March 21, 2011 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on Rayonier Rd. in Jesup, Ga. The Wayne County, Ga. native was a 2000 graduate of Wayne County High School and received an associate degree from Altamaha Technical College. He was the 2007 AMA Pro Star National Drag Racing Champion and Rookie of the Year. He was employed with Rayonier, loved drag racing, four-wheeler riding, helping people with their hobbies, and had a great interest in cars and trucks. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents: Evans and Loretta Carter.

Survivors are his wife: Shawna Elizabeth Poppell of Jesup, Ga.; his mother and step-father: Suzette C. and Chip Horton of Jesup, Ga.; his father: Kenny Poppell, Jr. of Odum, Ga.; a sister: Kayla McBee of Jesup, Ga.; a brother: Logan Poppell of Odum, Ga.; paternal grandparents: Kenneth and Vivian Dukes Poppell of Odum, Ga.; multiple cousins and extended relatives.

Funeral services will be 11 A.M. Friday, March 25, 2011 from Unity Church of God with Rev. Hulet Smith and Rev. Mickey Tomberlin officiating. Interment will be in the Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Chad Akiki, Mickey Finn, Chris Harter, Jamie “Hot Rod” Millholland, Michael “Big Baby” Moore, Jonathan Murphy, Henry Ring, and Josh Runyon. Honorary pallbearers will be his drag racing friends from around the country, Michael Morrison, D.J. Peyton, Kenny Poppell, Jr., Brandon “Squirrel” Yeomans, and Mike Morrison.

Memorials may be made to the Kenny Poppell Scholarship Fund @ Altamaha Technical College, 1777 W. Cherry St. Jesup, Ga. 31545.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday, March 24, 2011 from Unity Church of God.
