Gray Harvell Jr. was born on April 16th, 1957 in Grove Hill, Alabama to Millie and Gray Harvell. He was the eldest of seven children and left school in the 4th grade to help care for his family. By age 18, he and his brother, Randy Harvell moved up to Birmingham, Alabama in hopes of finding better employment opportunities for their family. After working for his father in a tire and auto shop, he landed a career with the City of Irondale Public Works Department. In 1974, he married his wife of over 40 years and they soon had their first of two children. By age 28, Mr. Harvell  taught himself to read and write and achieved his high school diploma, which earned his promotion to the superintendent of the Irondale Public Works Department and later he became the co-director for the city works just before he retired in 2004. Between his career and his ability to sell anything, Mr. Harvell was a self-made millionaire who was known by all to “always have money in his pockets and shoes.”  Mr. Harvell has spent his retirement years as a proud grandfather and great-grandfather.
