Elmer Berndt

Place of birth: None

On November 23, 2016 our family suffered a tremendous loss.Elmer Berndt, December 16, 1947, of Rogersville, tn passed away unexpectedly during a house fire, at age 68. Berndt was a veteran of the Vietnam war with 2 purple hearts. It was no walk in the park but his battle didn’t end in Vietnam. It had just begun. Elmer enjoyed his animals, collecting pictures of family, growing/canning vegetables and sports. He was always putting other peoples needs before his own, loved his family dearly and had a great sense of humor. Even though he suffered tremendous losses of his own, he was a loving husband, son, brother, father, uncle and best friend. He had a beautiful soul that touched the hearts of everyone he met and knew. He is survived by his children Mike and Ben Berndt, granddaughter  Zoey Berndt, his mother Edith Berndt  of Venice Fl, sisters Sherry Whitten and Andrea Berndt of Venice, Fl, sister Cindy Meitzler of Norfolk, Virginia, niece Rachel Deuberry and great niece Bella Deuberry, and nephew Michael Whitten. We were all privileged and honored to have known such a wonderful man. Your memory is a keepsake which we will always treasure in our hearts forever. For you were someone special who meant words can say. We all love you dearly and miss you horribly but your in heaven with god now watching over us all.

I was about 8 the last time I saw Meech. That is what people called him, and how I guess it was spelled. He was home from being wounded, around Thanksgiving, I think '68. A few of the neighbors were gathered around a picnic table in his backyard. I asked him ”If he got shot?” I think he said it was shrapnel. He was drinking beer, and whenever a shotgun would go off in the woods, he’d jump. (Squirrel hunting season had started.) Several shots went off and he kept jumping. Before he left for Vietnam, the Summer of ‘66, some of the neighborhood kids started to wrestle with Eddie, a guest we had at our house, and I remember asking Meech to “make them top fighting Eddie.” The Berndt’s had a life size Doll House and a covered shed with pavement in front, where Elmer kept his homemade barbells (Cement in coffee cans with a bar in between.). That is where he saved Eddie. We often prayed at the dinner table, and in church, for his safe return. Jimmy
