Robert Charles McDonald, 89, of Columbus, Ohio passed away peacefully Tuesday night (June 9, 2015) at Riverside Methodist Hospital after years of struggling with many major illnesses. He was born September 13, 1925 in Richmondville, NY, son of the late Ronald McDonald and Dorthy McDonald. Following graduation from Richmondville High School he enlisted in the Army in 1944, was sent to France where he was seriously injured and awarded The Purple Heart. Robert worked for Remington Rand in Cobleskill and Tonawanda, NY before being transferred to Marietta, Ohio in 1970. He retired from Kardex in Marietta, Ohio in 1988. For many years he was the treasurer and secretary of Sandhill Water and Sewer Association in Reno, Ohio. While working in Tonawanda he met and then married Lila Mae Nassiff in 1964. He was the loving father of 3 children. Sue (James) Nickel, Larry (Vicki) McDonald, and Alice (Henry) Walters. He was also the proud and loving grandfather of 9 grandchildren. Karina Mcdonald, Deanna Wilson, James Nickel Jr., Michael McDonald, Debra Wasielewski, Max Walters, Nathan Walters, Luke Walters, and Lily Walters and 11 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother, Carl McDonald and sister Aileen Gray along with many nieces and nephews. Spending time with his family, neighbors, and friends was a very important part of his life. Nothing made him happier than having his grandchildren around. He was active in many veteran organizations. Life member of the American Legion, Disabled Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and The Order of The Purple Heart. A military memorial service will be held at East Lawn Memorial Park in Reno, Ohio on Friday June 12, 2015 at 11am.
